MATERIALS AND METHODS

Working on copper and steel, my art involves adhering powdered glass (vitreous enamel) to metal with high heat (1300-1600 degrees F). Using massive torches or a kiln, the metal is formed before, during, and after the firing, depending on the piece, and has a rough, earthy, feel to it.  While the goal in small enameled pieces is smoothness and perfection, I see the enamel and metal as entities of their own and when they wish to crack or buckle, I allow it.  For me, imperfection is beauty. While most of my work is meant to be hung on a wall, I find that I’m moving toward free standing, sculptural pieces— which is tremendously exciting to the creative process.  The current works you see are done on copper and steel and range in size from 2’x4’ to 6’x10’. They reflect my emotions- joy, unhappiness, humor, and fear- in reaction to contemporaneous events that have occurred in my life.  I hope they will evoke something in you.
